91 Octane + Fuel Additives or 95 Octane: Which Makes More Sense?

Question

One side says 95 octane is the better choice because it offers higher knock resistance and already contains detergent additives.

The other side argues that 91 octane paired with a quality fuel additive like Liqui Moly, System G, Red Line SI-1, etc., can keep the fuel system just as clean while costing less overall.

The catch is that octane and fuel additives do different jobs. Higher octane improves knock resistance, while additives primarily help clean injectors and reduce deposits.

So, what has worked for you?

Are you running 95 octane or 91 octane with additives?
Have you noticed any difference in performance, refinement, mileage, or engine response?
If you've tried both, which would you recommend for a stock TSI used in mixed city and highway driving?

15k km on my kylaq manual bought in feb 2026 and this is july 2026.
70% of my fuel was COCO based power95 HPCL
25% xp95 IOCL
5% jio bp and speed95 BPCL
Not even once I have used 91 octane fuel. Jio bp is also 95 RON after govmnt mandated E20 to be 95 RON from 1 april, 2026.
I have used liquimolly injection cleaner once 15-25 days back
I am getting 18+ easily.
I would highly recommend to only get either private player's normal fuel (which is 95 RON) and not v-power or PSU's premium fuel like power95, xp95, speed95 from their COCO pumps.

1. Octane

If both are truly RON 95, there is no performance advantage.

Your ECU doesn't know whether the octane came from XP95 or another compliant RON 95 fuel.

Result:

2. Engine Performance

On a stock 1.0 TSI:

same boost
same ignition timing
same torque
same horsepower

No measurable difference.

3. Knock Resistance

Both should resist knock equally.

The ECU will behave almost identically.

4. Injector Cleaning

This is where things differ.

XP95 already contains detergent additives.

System G is an additional cleaner.

A quality cleaner usually contains more concentrated detergents than the amount already blended into fuel.

Therefore:

Regular petrol + System G may clean injectors more aggressively.

5. Carbon Deposit Prevention

Neither fuel can prevent all carbon deposits in a direct-injection engine.

System G may help keep:

6. Fuel Economy

If octane is identical:

Mileage differences are usually too small to notice.

Sticking to a COCO pump and using power petrol such as CP95 and Power95 should be sufficient as per me.
Using additives is not giving a huge advantage.
Also the additives are also having duplicates.

So COCO premium petrols are better.

octane boosters are waste of money  e20 fuel is already 96 octane and thats more than enough for 1.0 tsi and 1.5 tsi engines .. no extra benifits of using octane boosters ..... better use a good uel addative like system g 2ml/liter of petrol for regular use ........... once in a year use liqui moly injector cleaners.

Been running *Jio Active* in my Taigun GT since Mar-26 and zero complaints so far. Engine feels smooth ..

Use XP 95/Power 95 for regular use and once or twice a year use injector cleaner and catalytic cleaner. This is more than enough.

I am using x95 only. I had used normal petrol too but I am getting better mileage and pickup with X95. With X95, I got the max average of 22KMPL and with other it was 14KMPL to 16 KMPL till date on highways. I had used additives after recommendations but didn't find much difference.

I had filled xp100 once as xp95 was not available and there wasn't much difference I found in terms to driving quality or mileage. XP95 is far better for TSI engines I believe than any other right now. Haven't tried the system with e20 petrol yet. Will give it a try once.

100% agree. JIO BP is superior than xp95. I got 18-19 kmpl mileage with xp95 and power95, but as soon as I switched to jip recenttly, 21+ mileage has been a new normal for me, I have done 2000 kms on jip bp and all of them from diff JIO BP pumps from highway, and 21+ kmpl is a go to mileage for me now at cheaper rate. In gujarat, here are diff prices for diff petrol

101.79 JIO BP
102.2 Nayara
102.8 ALL PSU pumps normal petrol +-0.5 rs
111.5 ALL PSU pump's premium petrol +-0.5 rs (xp95, speed95, power95) 

Mine is highway running car, where jio bp is easily available at every 30 kms approx. I have pledged to not use any other petrol from now on. ;-)

Proctane is for octane boosting. It has secondary advantage of fuel stabiliser, I would not recommend it except for specific 100 octane supported engines. Instead you can just use petrol stabiliser.
