objective behind Auto Start-Stop feature in VW Skoda

Question

Why the Auto Start-Stop feature is there in VW Skoda cars? Is it for saving fuel or something else? What is the recommended suggestion if this should be enabled or disabled? By default this feature is enabled and I feel this will drain and reduce battery age. What is your opinion guys?

For city Dr, it’s a useless feature because it is very centric sensitive and turns of the engine even during stop crossing. My default sitting is to turn it off.

Well i have kind of a mixed opinion. 
Whatever start stop i have used previously in other manufacturers do not work quite as good as start stop in VW Skoda, for me it does a good job in heavy banglore traffic.
Also the anti-stall assistance works really well in bumper to bumper traffic.

Well I have observed this feature conciously both in extreme traffic and relaxed one, and I can say that in number to number traffic it's useless and I have to switch it off, but where there is seamless traffic with occasional signals, tolls on highways, airport parking lane etc it's actually quite useful, it's great when fuel stops burning unnecessarily. So yes, not really a must have, but not that worse to be honest. Also regarding battery, I honestly don't think it's going to drain it especially if you switch it off like I do where I know I am going to face heavy traffic on my trip , I don't have to think about it, but has eventually became a habit and it doesn't really irritate me.
